USDJPY Dips as Yen Strengthens on Japan Policy Signals and Middle East Tensions

USDJPY Dips as Yen Strengthens on Japan Policy Signals and Middle East Tensions

The USDJPY fell 0.32% as yen strengthened on Japan's domestic investment push and rising rate expectations. Middle East tensions and Canadian jobs data loom ahead.

USDJPY Leads Dollar Decline Amid Japan Policy Signals

The USDJPY declined 0.32% on Thursday, leading losses among major currency pairs as the yen strengthened following comments from Japan's Finance Minister, Katayama. The official signaled plans to encourage domestic institutional investors, including the Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF), to increase allocations to Japanese assets. This move, coupled with expanded access to Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) for households, reinforced expectations for a gradual normalization of Japan's interest rate policy.

The yen's rally was underpinned by the prospect of stronger domestic demand for JGBs and rising rate differentials. Traders interpreted the policy signals as a shift toward retaining capital within Japan, reducing the need for carry trades that typically weaken the currency. Technical indicators suggest further downside pressure on USDJPY if risk sentiment remains fragile.

Middle East Tensions Weigh on Risk Appetite

A fragile calm returned to the Middle East after two days of U.S.-Iran strikes, though shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted. The energy market faced fresh headwinds as supply concerns persisted, with crude oil rising $0.69 to $72.82 a barrel. The geopolitical uncertainty dampened risk appetite, favoring safe-haven assets like the yen and gold.

Eurozone Inflation Data Offers Limited Surprises

Germany's final CPI printed at -0.3% m/m, aligning with expectations, while France's final CPI was revised to -0.3% m/m, slightly below the prior estimate. The data reinforced a moderating inflation trend in the euro area, offering little catalyst for ECB policy adjustments. The EURUSD traded sideways, reflecting subdued momentum ahead of key U.S. and Canadian economic releases.

Canadian Employment Report in Focus

Markets await Canada's employment report at 8:30 AM ET, with economists forecasting 11.2K job gains versus 87.8K in the prior month. The unemployment rate is expected to hold at 6.6%. The data will test the Bank of Canada's policy stance, with the Canadian dollar likely to react to labor market resilience. Building permits data, projected to rise 1.0% m/m, adds to the economic calendar.

U.S. Yields Edge Higher Ahead of Key Data

U.S. Treasury yields ticked up marginally, with the 10-year at 4.547% and the 30-year at 5.063%. The modest rise in yields suggests cautious optimism about economic growth, though pre-market equity futures painted a mixed picture with the S&P and Nasdaq lower.

Commodities and Crypto Markets

Gold slipped 0.51% to $4,102 an ounce, while silver fell 0.92% to $59.41. Bitcoin extended gains to $64,368, diverging from traditional safe havens amid persistent demand for digital assets.
