Canada's June jobs report beat expectations, with the unemployment rate falling to 6.5%. USDCAD faces near-term support amid mixed technical signals.
Canada Labor Market Resilience Boosts CAD
Canada's June employment report delivered a surprise, with the economy adding 18,200 jobs against a forecast of 10,000, while the unemployment rate declined to 6.5% from 6.6%. Although part-time roles dominated the gains, private-sector employment rose by 32,000, offsetting a 31,000 drop in government payrolls. Average hourly earnings accelerated to 3.7% year-over-year, signaling persistent wage pressures.
The manufacturing sector remained a weak spot, shedding 17,000 jobs and extending losses from its January 2025 peak. Despite this, the overall labor market resilience supports the Bank of Canada's cautious optimism, with markets pricing in a 50% probability of a rate hike by December.
USDCAD Technical Dynamics
The USDCAD pair has been under pressure this week, with sellers maintaining control amid choppy price action. The breakdown below the 100- and 200-hour moving averages (1.41846 and 1.41937) shifted the short-term bias to the downside. However, a key support zone between 1.41297 and 1.41488 has repeatedly attracted buyers, with Wednesday's low at 1.41370 capping downside momentum.
For bears, a sustained break below 1.41297 could trigger further losses. Bulls, meanwhile, need a reclaim of the 1.41740 high, followed by a move above the moving averages, to reassert control. The pair's near-term direction hinges on Friday's U.S. jobs data and BoC policy signals.
