US Dollar Gains as Iran Ceasefire Collapse Fuels Risk-Off Sentiment; RBNZ Rate Hike Boosts NZD

The US dollar strengthened against major pairs amid renewed Iran tensions, while the RBNZ's rate hike lifted the NZD. Markets react to geopolitical risks and central bank moves.

US Dollar Rises on Iran Geopolitical Tensions

The US dollar advanced against the euro, yen, and pound on Tuesday as President Donald Trump declared the Iran ceasefire and memorandum of understanding (MoU) effectively "over," reigniting geopolitical fears. The shift toward a confrontational stance erased earlier optimism over diplomatic de-escalation, triggering a flight to safety in currency markets.

Trump's comments followed escalating hostilities, including Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and US retaliatory strikes on over 80 targets. His dismissal of negotiations as "a waste of time" and characterization of Iranian leaders as "liars" marked a sharp pivot from recent diplomatic overtures, pressuring risk-sensitive assets.

RBNZ Rate Hike Lifts New Zealand Dollar

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) delivered its first rate hike in three years, increasing the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.50%. The central bank signaled further tightening is likely, citing persistent inflation risks and a weaker kiwi dollar as potential drivers of imported price pressures. While headline inflation is projected to ease from 3.9% in Q2 to 3.3% in Q3, policymakers expect it to return to the 2% target by mid-2027.

The hawkish tone boosted the NZD, which outperformed other currencies despite broader risk-off flows. The RBNZ noted that the partial reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has alleviated near-term oil supply concerns, supporting its outlook for economic recovery.

Market Reaction: Oil Surges, Stocks Slide

Crude oil prices jumped $3.47 to $73.92 a barrel, hitting a daily high of $75.30, as traders priced in potential supply disruptions. US equity futures pointed to a lower open, with the Dow down 375 points, the S&P 500 falling 46.50 points, and the Nasdaq dropping 229 points.

Government bond yields climbed across the curve, with the 10-year Treasury yield rising 3.1 basis points to 4.559%. Gold and silver retreated, while Bitcoin slipped to $62,227.

Implications for Forex Traders

The dollar's strength against major pairs underscores its safe-haven appeal amid geopolitical uncertainty. However, the NZD's outperformance highlights the impact of divergent central bank policies. Traders should monitor upcoming US inflation data and Federal Reserve communications for cues on rate path expectations. Technical support and resistance levels for EURUSD, USDJPY, and GBPUSD remain critical amid volatile risk sentiment.
