RBA Expected to Hold Rates at 4.35% Amid Inflation Uncertainty

RBA Expected to Hold Rates at 4.35% Amid Inflation Uncertainty

A Reuters poll shows 42 of 45 economists expect the RBA to pause its tightening cycle on June 16, with markets focused on forward guidance and Middle East-driven inflation risks.

RBA Rate Decision: Near-Unanimous Hold Forecasted

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is poised to maintain its cash rate at 4.35% at its June 16 meeting, according to a Reuters poll of 45 economists, with 42 forecasting a hold. This pause follows a cumulative 75 basis point increase since February, reversing last year's easing measures as policymakers combat inflationary pressures exacerbated by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The decision comes amid mixed signals on the economic front. First-quarter GDP growth slowed to 0.3% from 0.9% previously, while unemployment rose to 4.5% in April—the highest since November 2021. Headline inflation eased to 4.2% in April from 4.6% in March but remains above the RBA's 2-3% target band. Core inflation, however, rose to 3.4% as energy price shocks from the Israel-Iran conflict filtered through the economy.

September Outlook: Hawkish vs. Dovish Divide

While markets broadly anticipate a pause, the September outlook reveals a split. Twenty-six of 44 economists project the cash rate will remain at 4.35% through the third quarter, but 18 expect further tightening, with some forecasting a peak of 4.60% or higher. Westpac's hawkish call for a 4.85% terminal rate underscores lingering concerns over persistent inflationary pressures.

NAB's Taylor Nugent argues the RBA has likely addressed domestic inflation risks and can now assess external shocks, while AMP's My Bui contends additional hikes are necessary to anchor price stability. This divergence reflects ongoing sensitivity in AUD and rates markets to upcoming inflation and labor data releases.

Market Implications for AUDUSD

The AUDUSD pair faces near-term consolidation as traders await the RBA's forward guidance and assessment of geopolitical risks. A dovish tone could bolster the Australian Dollar, while hawkish signals may pressure the currency lower. Technical levels around 0.6600-0.6650 will be critical for intraday momentum.

Global risk sentiment remains cautious, with energy markets and commodity-linked currencies under scrutiny. Traders should monitor upcoming U.S. CPI and Australian employment data for directional cues.
