Nasdaq Technicals Turn Neutral as S&P 500 Maintains Bullish Bias

The Nasdaq and S&P 500 rise, but divergent technical signals emerge. Key moving averages and resistance levels define near-term outlooks for traders.

Market Overview

Both the Nasdaq and S&P 500 advanced on Wednesday, with the Nasdaq up 0.65% and the S&P 500 gaining 0.51%. However, their technical trajectories diverge, offering mixed signals for short-term momentum.

Nasdaq Technical Analysis

The Nasdaq has retraced into the zone between its 100-hour moving average at 25,894.06 and the 200-hour moving average at 26,136.05. Trading near 26,042, the index sits at a critical juncture. The 200-hour MA has historically acted as a resistance level, attracting sellers in prior sessions. A sustained breakout above this threshold would bolster bullish momentum, targeting the 26,559–26,788 swing resistance zone. Conversely, a drop below the 100-hour MA could reignite bearish pressure.

S&P 500 Technical Outlook

The S&P 500 shows a more robust technical setup, having reclaimed both its 100-hour MA (7,454) and 200-hour MA (7,473). With these levels now acting as support, the index’s path of least resistance points higher. Immediate upside targets include a descending trendline near 7,542, followed by the June 15 swing high at 7,577 and the all-time peak of 7,620.90 from June 2.

Implications for Traders

For equity traders, the Nasdaq’s neutral stance suggests caution until a decisive move above 26,136.05 materializes. The S&P 500’s bullish bias supports long positions, provided key moving averages hold. In the FX space, rising equities may buoy risk-sensitive currencies like the AUD, NZD, and emerging market units, while safe-haven assets such as the USD and JPY could face headwinds if risk appetite strengthens.

Key Levels to Watch

  • Nasdaq: Resistance at 26,136.05 (200-hour MA); Support at 25,894.06 (100-hour MA)
  • S&P 500: Resistance at 7,542 (trendline) and 7,577 (swing high); Support at 7,454–7,473 (moving averages)
