Japan's exports rose 17% in May, driven by semiconductor demand and AI investment, narrowing the trade deficit to 378.7 billion yen. The data bolsters the BoJ's tightening outlook.
Japan's Export Growth Reaches Fastest Pace Since Late 2022
Japan's exports climbed 17% year-on-year in May, surpassing forecasts and marking the ninth straight month of growth. The surge, the strongest since November 2022, was led by semiconductor shipments, which jumped 61.2% amid sustained global demand for AI infrastructure and data centers. Car exports also rose 16.4%, while shipments to China and the U.S. increased 17.9% and 12.5%, respectively.
Trade Deficit Narrows Ahead of BoJ Policy Tightening
The trade deficit narrowed to 378.7 billion yen, significantly below the forecast 564.6 billion yen. This improvement stems from a 28.5% drop in crude oil import values, driven by reduced volumes through the Strait of Hormuz amid geopolitical tensions. However, the decline reflects supply disruptions rather than weaker energy demand, with Japan diversifying procurement toward non-Middle Eastern suppliers.
BoJ Rate Hike Reinforces Tightening Path
The export data arrives a day after the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.0%, the highest in over three decades. The stronger export performance and reduced trade deficit provide modest support for the yen, which traded near 160.4 per dollar post-release. A potential reopening of the Hormuz Strait under the U.S.-Iran framework could further ease import costs, though Middle East export exposure remains a headwind, with shipments down 32%.
Implications for Forex Traders
The yen's resilience against the dollar may face pressure if the BoJ signals continued tightening, though the currency's inverse correlation with risk sentiment could limit gains. Traders will monitor upcoming inflation data and BoJ communications for cues on future rate adjustments. The narrowing deficit offers temporary relief to Japan's current account dynamics, but energy costs and geopolitical risks remain key variables.
