Fed's Hammack Signals Caution on Inflation, Hints at Potential Rate Hikes Amid Strong Labor Market

Federal Reserve official Hammack notes the U.S. jobs market is near full employment but warns inflation remains elevated beyond energy sectors, suggesting possible rate hikes. Markets eye DXY and Forex implications.

Fed Official Hammack Flags Persistent Inflation, Labor Market Strength

Federal Reserve policymaker Christopher Waller, speaking in his capacity as a key voice on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), indicated that the U.S. labor market is approaching full employment while emphasizing that inflation pressures remain elevated across multiple sectors. His comments, made ahead of the upcoming FOMC meeting, suggest the central bank may maintain a hawkish stance despite recent declines in energy prices.

"Inflation is still too high," Waller stated, adding that core inflation metrics, which exclude volatile food and energy components, continue to show underlying strength. He highlighted that persistent core services inflation, particularly in sectors like healthcare and housing, underscores the need for continued vigilance. While oil price moderation has temporarily eased headline inflation concerns, Waller cautioned that broader economic growth dynamics could complicate the Fed's policy trajectory.

Market Reaction and Policy Implications

Waller's remarks reinforced expectations for a cautious approach to monetary tightening, with traders pricing in a potential 25-basis-point rate hike at the July FOMC meeting. The dollar index (DXY) edged higher on the comments, reflecting renewed demand for the greenback amid uncertainty over the Fed's next move. Bond yields also rose slightly, with the 10-year Treasury yield climbing to 4.35%.

The policymaker emphasized that he would enter the meeting with an "open mind" but acknowledged concerns about the cumulative impact of high interest rates on economic activity. Cyclical improvements in transport, industry, and construction were noted as potential tailwinds, though housing sector headwinds persist.

Forex Traders Eye Dollar Volatility

For currency markets, Waller's comments reinforce the DXY's sensitivity to Fed rhetoric. The dollar's near-term direction will hinge on Friday's nonfarm payrolls data and subsequent FOMC communications. EURUSD and GBPUSD pairs face downward pressure if the Fed signals further tightening, while USDJPY could test recent highs amid divergent global rate paths.

Technical indicators point to a consolidating DXY, with the 100-day moving average acting as key support. A break below 104.50 could signal short-term weakness, whereas a move above 105.80 would confirm bullish momentum.
