EUR/USD Poised for Recovery as Eurozone Growth Shows Resilience: MUFG Forecasts 1.1800 Target

MUFG projects EUR/USD to rebound toward 1.1800 amid improving business confidence and resilient industrial production data, signaling reduced downside risks for the euro.

EUR/USD Technical and Fundamental Outlook

The EUR/USD pair is currently testing the lower boundary of its year-long trading range between 1.1400 and 1.1800, having faced prolonged selling pressure driven by energy market volatility and diminished expectations for European Central Bank (ECB) monetary tightening. However, recent data suggests a potential shift in momentum.

June composite business confidence metrics in the eurozone climbed to 50.0, rebounding from May's 48.5 reading, though remaining below pre-conflict levels near 52.0 observed in February. Concurrently, stronger-than-anticipated industrial production figures from France and Spain, coupled with upward revisions to April data, have led to upward adjustments in Q2 GDP growth forecasts to 0.25%, up from near-stagnation projections.

ECB Rate Path and Market Implications

MUFG analysts highlight that a faster-than-expected resolution of the energy shock, alongside the prospect of a final 25-basis-point ECB rate hike in September, supports a constructive outlook for the euro. ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane has maintained that another rate increase remains feasible despite easing inflationary pressures.

While a September hike is not guaranteed, the confluence of improving cyclical indicators and potential monetary tightening provides the euro with its most favorable backdrop since the onset of the energy crisis. This dynamic positions EUR/USD for a potential recovery toward the upper end of its established range rather than a breakdown below 1.1400.

Trading Considerations

Traders are likely to monitor upcoming eurozone economic releases and ECB communications for confirmation of the recovery narrative. Key support levels remain anchored near 1.1400, with resistance clustered around 1.1800. A decisive break above the latter could signal a broader re-rating of eurozone assets.
