China Inflation Data Set to Drive Forex Market Volatility on Thursday

China's CPI and PPI releases will anchor Asian trading, with markets eyeing inflation trends and potential PBOC policy signals.

China Inflation Data in Focus Ahead of Asian Trading Session

Markets in Asia will center on Thursday’s release of China’s consumer and producer price indices (CPI and PPI), which could shape near-term risk sentiment and currency valuations. The data arrives amid lingering concerns over global growth and sticky inflationary pressures.

June CPI figures are expected to show a year-over-year decline of 0.3%, easing from May’s 0.1% drop, while PPI may contract 3.2%, signaling persistent deflationary risks in the world’s second-largest economy. A steeper-than-forecast drop in either metric could bolster expectations for additional monetary easing from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC).

Forex Implications and Market Reaction

The offshore yuan (CNH) and regional currencies like the Australian dollar (AUD) may react to the data, given Australia’s trade exposure to China. A weaker-than-expected print could weigh on risk-linked assets, pressuring AUDUSD and NZDUSD pairs. Conversely, signs of stabilization in inflation might support equity markets and commodity-linked currencies.

Global risk sentiment remains fragile, with traders monitoring geopolitical tensions and central bank divergence. The dollar index (DXY) could see volatility as investors reassess the Fed’s rate path against easing signals elsewhere.

Technical Context and Trader Outlook

From a technical standpoint, USDJPY and EURUSD are likely to trade cautiously ahead of the data. Key resistance levels for the dollar index align with the 104.50–105.00 range, while support hovers near 103.00. Traders will also watch bond yields, particularly U.S. Treasuries, for clues on capital flows.
