Canada Building Permits Miss Expectations, CAD Weakens on Economic Data

Canada's May building permits fell 1.7% vs. +2.4% forecast, with non-residential sectors dragging. CAD reacts negatively amid broader risk-off sentiment.

Canada Building Permits Decline 1.7% in May, Missing Forecast

Canada's building permits for May recorded a 1.7% month-over-month decline, significantly underperforming the +2.4% market expectation. The prior month's figure was revised to -6.6% from an initial report of -7.6%, highlighting persistent weakness in the country's construction sector. Total permits reached C$12.4 billion, with a 1.6% drop on a constant dollar basis and a 7.0% year-over-year contraction.

Non-Residential Sector Drives Decline

The non-residential sector saw a 6.1% fall to C$4.7 billion, with industrial permits plunging C$341 million and Ontario accounting for the largest drag at C$236.2 million. Commercial permits rose slightly to C$2.4 billion, led by gains in Ontario and Newfoundland & Labrador, but institutional sectors in Ontario and Quebec offset these advances. Eight provinces and one territory reported declines, underscoring regional disparities.

Residential Sector Shows Modest Recovery

The residential sector posted a 1.2% increase to C$7.7 billion, driven by multi-unit permits rising C$161.9 million. Ontario led with a C$235 million gain, while Toronto contributed C$129 million. However, single-family permits fell C$70.7 million, with Manitoba and Alberta recording the steepest drops.

Market Reaction and Implications

The data weighed on the Canadian dollar, with CADUSD slipping as traders reassessed growth prospects. The miss raises questions about the Bank of Canada's policy trajectory amid lingering economic uncertainty. While the residential uptick offers some optimism, the broader non-residential slump signals subdued business investment confidence.

Trading Considerations

Forex traders may monitor upcoming Canadian economic indicators, including employment and inflation figures, for further cues on monetary policy. The CAD's reaction also reflects broader risk sentiment, with global markets remaining sensitive to growth concerns. Technical levels around 1.3700 and 1.3600 in CADUSD could attract near-term attention.
