Singapore Exports Surge 38.4% on AI Demand Amid US Tariff Threat

Singapore Exports Surge 38.4% on AI Demand Amid US Tariff Threat

Singapore's non-oil domestic exports hit a 20-year high in May, driven by AI-related electronics demand, while a proposed US 12.5% tariff poses risks to a third of direct US shipments.

Singapore's Export Surge Driven by AI Infrastructure Demand

Singapore's non-oil domestic exports rose 38.4% year-on-year in May, the largest annual increase in at least two decades, exceeding the Reuters poll median of 31.1%. The surge was primarily fueled by robust demand for AI-related electronics, including integrated circuits, disk media products, and personal computers, reflecting sustained capital investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure by key export markets.

Electronics exports to the United States climbed 303% annually, while shipments to Taiwan, a critical semiconductor supply chain hub, rose 218.6%. Exports to China also increased, though shipments to Indonesia declined. The strong performance underscores Singapore's role as a global technology and trade intermediary amid intensifying AI-driven capital expenditure cycles.

US Tariff Proposal Threatens Key Export Market

The upbeat export data arrives alongside a potential policy headwind. In June, the US Trade Representative identified Singapore among 60 countries accused of inadequate enforcement against forced labor trade, proposing a 12.5% tariff on Singaporean exports to the US. Approximately one-third of Singapore's direct US exports could face the proposed levies if enacted.

Singapore's trade ministry rejected the forced labor allegations, emphasizing active domestic enforcement. However, the tariff threat highlights the city-state's vulnerability to geopolitical tensions, given its heavy reliance on international trade and the US as a primary destination market.

Implications for Forex Traders and SGDUSD

The divergent forces of AI-driven export momentum and US trade policy risks present a complex outlook for the Singapore dollar (SGDUSD). While the export surge signals resilience in Singapore's trade-dependent economy, the potential tariff imposition could dampen future growth prospects, particularly if it disrupts supply chain dynamics or reduces demand from the US market.

Traders may monitor upcoming US trade policy developments and Singapore's June export data for further signals. Technical resistance levels in SGDUSD could face pressure if tariff concerns overshadow growth optimism, while support may emerge if AI demand sustains momentum.
