June French inflation falls to 1.8%, easing pressure on ECB. EUR/USD traders watch for policy implications and risk sentiment shifts.
French Inflation Declines to 1.8% in June, Supporting ECB Dovish Stance
France's final June consumer price index (CPI) confirmed a 1.8% year-over-year increase, down from 2.4% in May, according to official data. The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) also met expectations at 2.0%, easing from 2.8% in the prior month. The deceleration in price pressures was largely driven by a significant slowdown in energy costs, which rose 11.1% in June compared to 16.6% in May.
On a monthly basis, headline inflation contracted by 0.3%, with energy prices declining 4.2% after a 0.6% rise in May. Core annual inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy components, dropped sharply to 1.0% from 1.5% in May. This decline was attributed to reduced air transport prices and seasonal discounts in clothing, insurance, and telecommunications services. Food price inflation slowed to 0.9% from 1.1%, while services inflation fell to 1.9% from 2.1%.
Market Implications for EUR/USD and ECB Outlook
The data reinforces expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) will maintain its current policy stance ahead of the summer recess. With inflation trending below the ECB's 2% target, pressure mounts on policymakers to delay any potential rate hikes. EUR/USD traders are likely to monitor upcoming ECB communications for forward guidance, particularly on tapering asset purchases and deposit rate adjustments.
Risk sentiment in broader markets remains cautious amid lingering concerns over global growth and energy supply disruptions. The euro's trajectory against the U.S. dollar will hinge on relative monetary policy expectations, with the Federal Reserve's tightening cycle contrasting against the ECB's more accommodative approach.
Technical Outlook and Key Levels
From a technical perspective, EUR/USD faces resistance near 1.0900-1.0950, with support clustered around 1.0700-1.0750. A sustained break below the latter could signal further downside toward 1.0600. Meanwhile, upside momentum requires a confirmed close above 1.0950 to target 1.1050.
