Crude Oil Surges on Geopolitical Tensions; Gold Drops Sharply

Crude oil futures jumped 9.42% to $78.14 amid escalating Middle East tensions, while gold fell 2.86% to $4,002.25. Technical levels and market implications analyzed.

Crude Oil Futures Rally on Escalating Geopolitical Risks

Crude oil futures surged 9.42% to settle at $78.14, marking the largest one-day gain since April 29. Prices eased to $77.51 in early trading but remained up 8.4% from Friday's close. The rally was driven by heightened geopolitical tensions following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a 20% transit fee on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz and a blockade on Iranian vessels. Reports of strikes near a Saudi Arabian airport further stoked fears of supply disruptions in the energy market.

Technical Analysis: Key Resistance Levels in Focus

The sharp rally pushed crude prices above the 200-day moving average at $74.21, with the session range spanning $72.61 to $78.45. The high stalled just below the 38.2% retracement of the June-to-July decline at $78.48, testing a critical resistance zone. A decisive break above $78.45-$78.48 could open the path to the June 17 high of $79.18, with further upside targeting the $82.00 area. On the downside, a failure to sustain gains may see prices retrace toward the $76.00-$77.10 swing area.

Gold Prices Plunge Amid Risk-Off Sentiment

Gold prices dropped sharply, falling $118 (2.86%) to $4,002.25. The metal breached key support levels, including the June 11 and July 8 lows near $4,021.52, turning former support into resistance. The next downside targets lie near the recent swing low at $3,962, with a break below that level shifting focus to the June 30 cycle low at $3,942.43. Buyers must reclaim $4,021.52 to ease near-term selling pressure.

Implications for Forex Traders

The oil rally reinforces inflation concerns, potentially influencing Federal Reserve policy expectations and the U.S. dollar's trajectory. Gold's decline reflects a temporary shift in safe-haven demand, though sustained geopolitical risks could revive bullion's appeal. Forex traders should monitor the DXY for dollar strength and watch commodity-linked currencies like AUD and NZD for sensitivity to energy prices.
