Crude Oil Price Drops Below Key Moving Average, Technical Outlook Weakens

Crude oil futures slipped below the 100-hour moving average, signaling renewed bearish momentum amid stalled buying pressure and geopolitical uncertainty.

Crude Oil Futures Decline Amid Failed Breakout Attempt

Crude oil prices retreated on Wednesday, settling at $69.50 per barrel, down $1.25 or 1.77%, after failing to sustain a breakout above the 100-hour moving average. The session high of $71.60 marked a brief attempt to reclaim bullish momentum, but sellers quickly reasserted control, pushing prices back below key technical levels.

The 100-hour moving average, currently at $70.21, remains a critical resistance level. A sustained move above this threshold is required to shift near-term sentiment in favor of buyers. However, the lack of follow-through suggests that the broader downtrend from the June 3 high of $96.86 persists, with rallies likely viewed as corrective within a bearish framework.

Technical Levels and Downside Risks

The next support levels for crude oil include last Friday’s low of $68.56 and the February 27 closing price of $67.28, which preceded the Iran conflict escalation. A break below these levels could accelerate downward pressure, particularly if demand concerns outweigh supply disruptions.

From a Forex perspective, the XAUUSD pair (gold/USD) may see increased volatility as crude oil’s weakness reflects broader risk aversion. Lower energy prices could ease inflationary pressures, potentially influencing central bank rate expectations, though the Federal Reserve’s stance remains data-dependent.

Political and Economic Context

National gasoline prices have risen to $3.84 per gallon, according to AAA, despite crude oil’s decline. This disconnect highlights the lag between oil prices and pump costs, a dynamic under scrutiny amid President Trump’s campaign promises to reduce energy costs. The divergence underscores ongoing challenges in translating commodity price movements into consumer relief.

Traders should monitor upcoming U.S. inventory data and OPEC+ policy signals for near-term direction. For now, the technical bias remains skewed toward the downside unless crude oil reclaims the 100-hour moving average with conviction.
