USDJPY Bullish Bias Strengthens as Pair Surpasses 2024 Highs

USDJPY extends gains above 162.00, with bullish momentum confirmed by key support retests. Traders eye 164.50 as next target amid sustained risk-on sentiment.

USDJPY Technical Outlook: Bullish Momentum Intact Above 162.00

The USDJPY has extended its upward trajectory, breaching the 2024 high near 161.95-97 and reinforcing a bullish technical bias. The pair initially rallied to 162.399 before retreating, but buying interest re-emerged at 162.04, validating the former resistance as a new support zone. Subsequent North American session activity saw the pair reach 162.508, followed by a pullback to 162.025. A swift recovery to 162.656 underscored sustained demand, with the pair maintaining elevated levels into the London close.

Key Support and Resistance Levels

Support:

  • 161.92-162.04 (critical zone to invalidate bullish bias)
  • 161.87 (100-hour moving average)
  • 161.66 (200-hour moving average)

Resistance:

  • 164.50 (November 1986 high, next major upside target)

Short-Term Outlook

The pair's ability to hold above 161.92-162.04 will be pivotal for maintaining bullish momentum. A sustained break below this range, coupled with a confirmed close below the 100/200-hour moving averages, could signal a shift in sentiment. Conversely, a move toward 164.50 remains the primary medium-term objective, with potential for further extension if buying pressure persists.

Macroeconomic Drivers

The rally aligns with broader risk-on sentiment in global markets, supported by expectations of accommodative U.S. monetary policy and relative stability in Japanese yen dynamics. Traders are monitoring upcoming U.S. inflation data and Federal Reserve communications for cues on dollar strength.

Risk Considerations

Volatility remains elevated as the pair tests key technical thresholds. Traders should exercise caution around support/resistance zones and consider wider stop-loss parameters given the pair's recent momentum-driven swings.
